Catherine Knight (nee Knatchbull)

Widow of Thomas Knight II, who had adopted Edward Austen as his heir; she resigned Godmersham to Edward in his lifetime and remained, from her house the White Friars in Canterbury, one of the family's kindest and most generous friends -- including to Jane's own pocket-money and, later, to her novels.
