The stock pastoral lover's name, inherited from Sidney's Arcadia by way of two centuries of pastoral verse; here doubly engaged, to Pistoletta and to Chloe, in a mix-up ‘The First Act of a Comedy’ never resolves. Austen's own footnote on spelling him ‘Streephon’ for the song sends up pedantic annotation itself.
